more about Crete

A rental car for a day was a daunting thought in Heraklion with all the traffic. However, we hoped to find the family village of our friend's son-in-law in the west and this was the only way to do it. The traffic was not too bad and we enjoyed the journey.
Well cultivated countryside, mainly grapes & olives (left).

Rugged inland; harvested oranges sold at the roadside (right).

Mike ringing his bell - St Michael the Archangel church.

When we were lost (again!) this sign looked promising. So we bumped along a track among the olives, with tractor noise in the background, ending up at a wee chapel. We eventually found Hari's family and received a warm welcome.

On our last day we took the bus to Rethimnon - dominated by a huge Venetian fort enclosing a village for their important people. It was very interesting to explore.

As usual, we enjoyed exploring the city's old town. Many homes have little or no backyards, but still grow things in all sorts of places. This lady sells cloths & enjoys her plants.

We enjoyed our last evening beside the harbour before boarding an overnight ferry (with a cabin of course!) back to Athens.

Farewell Crete.
