We stayed in Wolf's comfortable penthouse apartment within walking distance of the city. After he had shown us around we had a meal in the city. It was dark when we finished & the landmarks we had seen were invisible! We have found GPS marvellous, especially for finding city places , but remembering street names is unnecessary. So we had no idea where we lived! Fortunately Kay had remembered Wolf's surname & eventually we found his address in a phone book in a pub. It was a relief to be home!

A view of the city from a popular beer garden (right). Wolf's apartment has a green roof deck (visible bottom left below) worth the 81 steps to get there!

Our view as we lay in bed - there are 700 ha of vineyards within the city limits.

We entered the city at Martinstor (Martin's Gate), part of the medieval fortifications begun in the 13th century.

Only a part of the huge Munster (Cathedral). Building took place between the 13th & 16th centuries. Today the building is continually being restored, damaged mainly by the environment, acid rain & doves.

Portal of the tower entrance hall, telling biblical stories. Restoration was completed in 2004.

Here we were more likely to be run over by a bike or tram than a car. Street waterways carried water for industry, animals & fire fighting in earlier times.
No golden arches here.

Augustinerplatz, one of a number of city squares.
The 16th century Historic Kaufhaus in the Munsterplatz, once a customs house where all merchants passing through the city had to present their wares. Mike can be seen discovering the only English second hand book he could find in the city. Luckily he could watch the BBC & Al Jazeera on Wolf's T

These paving patterns outside the Old City Hall show the coats-of-arms of some of Freiburg's nine partner cities. The Chancellor, Angela Merkel, had spoken here that afternoon as national elections take place at the end of September.

Street drinking & dining is very popular.

Here was a busy playground and bikes with trailers to carry children.
We took the cable car up Schauinsland, Freiburg's highest peak, in the Black Forest.

A great view.

A great view.
We appreciated the opportunity to meet Falk, who was on our Costa Rican trip in March (seems a long time ago now!). On our last evening Wolf took us to a traditional restaurant in the countryside, a fitting end to a very enjoyable time in Freiburg.
